There are 48 SSOD ballet students currently preparing for their Royal Academy of Dance exams and presentations. Helen Toner will take her Intermediate exam in the spring and the others will take their exams and presentations on Thursday March 11 and Friday March 12 at the studio. Please note that there will be no regular classes on Tuesday March 9, Wednesday March 10, Thursday March 11 and Friday March 12. There will be regular classes on Monday March 8 and Saturday March 13.

Also, congratulations to Alanna Pierias who achieved Distinction on her Grade 7 exam last term. Well done Alanna!

MARCH BREAK CAMP

If you are looking for a fun and fit way for your child to spend March Break, look no further.  Once again, Swansea School of Dance will be offering a March Break camp from Monday March 15 to Friday March 19. It will be a fun filled week of dance, drama and music. Full day camp (from 9:00 to 3:30) is $250 and half day (from 9:00 to 12:00) is $150. Registration forms are available at the studio and online at www.swanseaschoolofdance.com – click on “Camps and PA Days” in the sidebar.

Please note that there will be no regular dance classes from Monday March 15 to and including Saturday March 20.

FAMILY VALENTINE DANCE

It’s time for the third annual Swansea School of Dance Family Valentine Dance!

On Saturday February 6 from 6:30 to 9:00pm the dance studio will be the place to be for a fun-filled family evening! Come and dance with your family and friends (can you say conga?), bid on fabulous items in the silent auction, enter the kids’ raffle and make a Valentine for your sweetheart.

Last year we raised $3000 to help cover the costs of our year end shows and we’d like to do the same again this year. Here’s what you can do:

  • Buy tickets! Bring the whole family, invite friends and neighbours. Tickets are $5 each and are on sale at the studio now. Tickets will also be available at the door but if possible please buy your tickets in advance.
  • Donate an item for the silent auction. Do you have any spare tickets to a sports or arts event? Do you have a special talent or service to offer? Do you have an “in” with a neighbourhood store or restaurant that might like to donate a gift basket or gift certificate?  If you have a donation, please email Melinda Taylor at           melinda@swanseaschoolofdance.com.
  •  Dancers, volunteer for a shift or two helping with refreshments, balloons or in the craft room. There will be sign up charts in the studio foyer so please sign up. It’s all for a good cause – your show!

On Saturday February 6th, put on your dancing shoes and your finest red and pink Valentine outfit and be prepared to boogie! Load your pockets with loonies and toonies so you can treat yourself and your family to a cupcake or bag of popcorn, make a Valentine and buy a balloon. And bring your cheque book for the silent auction. See you there!

We have decided to donate a portion of the proceeds from the Valentine’s Dance to Feed the Children’s relief efforts in Haiti.

INCOME TAX RECEIPTS

Income tax receipts for class fees pertaining to classes taken in 2009 and 2009 March Break and Summer Camps will be emailed to you this week (week of January 25). Please note that receipts are only for class fees, not registration and costume fees.

TEACHER NEWS

Miss Sunny and her husband Dylan welcomed baby Ozzy (and future Superboy!) to the family on Wednesday January 20, a little brother for Stella and Weston. Congratulations!

Miss Meghan is off this term awaiting the arrival of her baby in late March – we’ll keep you posted.

You might see Miss Jade around the studio a bit these days – she’s helping with RAD exam preparation – great to have her back!

Miss Christy is preparing for her teacher’s examination with the Performing Arts Educators of Canada this term. Once achieved, she will be able to prepare students to take their examinations in Tap and Jazz, similar to the RAD Ballet examinations. To learn more about the Performing Arts Educators of Canada, visit www.paec.ca. Good luck Miss Christy!

FREE TICKETS TO SWAN LAKE DRESS REHEARSAL

As a very special treat, the National Ballet of Canada has generously given us 200 free tickets to the dress rehearsal of Swan Lake on Wednesday March 10 at 8:00pm. If you are interested, please email melinda@swanseaschoolofdance.com. Tickets will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis and you are eligible for 2 tickets per child currently registered at SSOD. Using that guideline, please indicate how many tickets you would like. We will let you know when the tickets have all been distributed.

SECURITY AT THE STUDIO

Please exercise your judgment when letting people into the Church. If someone is at the door on Mayfield and wants access to the Church or Church Office, please ask them to ring the doorbell marked for the Church Office. This is for the safety and security of our children and the other people working in the Church.

BOOTS!

A familiar reminder once again to please place all boots either in the cubbies provided on the stair landing or on the boot mats on the stair landing, without blocking access to the stairs. Anywhere else is considered a fire hazard.  The boot rule applies to everyone coming to the studio, not just the dancers. Boots and shoes create a big mess in the foyer and change room which the dancers step in with their dance shoes and track into the studio. Thanks for your cooperation.
